Dealing with Life, Death and Beyond: Bardo, Phowa and Thukdam

Dealing with the different stages of this life and beyond, into the next, is a precious skill for a Buddhist practitioner. If we can use life and death as opportunities for transformation and spiritual growth, we can make the most of this human life. Ringu Tulku Rinpoche has kindly agreed to teach on this most essential topic for five days, from 23rd to the 27th of July.
Register

A talk on Thukdam

24th July at 5 pm UTC

Tukdam: a filmmaker and researcher’s perspectives

Donagh Coleman is a Finnish-Irish-American documentary filmmaker and medical anthropology doctoral student at the University of California Berkeley, whose present film project and dissertation research focuses on Tukdam, the Tibetan Buddhist tradition of dying in meditation. Donagh Coleman holds degrees in Philosophy and Psychology and Music and Media Technologies from Trinity College Dublin, and a MA in Asian Studies from UC Berkeley.

In what Tibetan Buddhists call tukdam, advanced meditators die in a consciously controlled manner in meditation. Though declared clinically dead, they often stay sitting upright in meditation posture; remarkably, their bodies remain fresh and lifelike, without signs of decay for days, sometimes weeks after clinical death. Indeed, from a Tibetan Buddhist point of view, the meditators are not dead yet; it is believed that consciousness is still present, which is keeping the body from decaying.

Every day

07:30 – 08:30 Calm Abiding Meditation

Silent meditation meeting. Together, we shall practice ‘Shamatha’ (Calm Abiding) meditation. Please feel free to drop in and out if you can’t attend the whole meditation.

10:00 – 10:45 Chenrezig Practice

The Chenrezig Practice is the most widely practised Tibetan Buddhist meditation which involves recitation, a visualisation and mantras. It is designed to stabilise the mind in compassion.

We will be doing this practice together in Tibetan with English translation. It involves a simple visualisation, reading the text together and reciting the mantra “Om Mani Padme Hum”. Through doing this practice, we invoke love and compassion for all sentient beings in the form of Chenrezig, a symbol of the compassion of all Buddhas.

All are welcome, no previous experience or knowledge of Buddhism required.

11:00 – 12:00 Kum Nye Tibetan Yoga

We will practise some simple bodywork for health, vitality, relaxation and well-being.  Suitable for all abilities and experience levels.  We will bear in mind the rest of the day’s programme, so this hour can complement sitting practice etc.  Everything will be guided so just come along in loose comfortable clothing and with somewhere to sit and lie down comfortably, to hand. A little more detail about Kum Nye can be found at: https://sites.google.com/site/acupuncturekumnyeyoga/kum-nye

On the 23rd, 24th, 26th and 27th

12:00 – 13:00 White Tara Sadhana

We will use Tenga Rinpoche’s short Sadhana text and practise both in English and Tibetan, using a new translation based on Ringu Tulku’s commentary.  All welcome. Please download the text from the very bottom of the page below, for this session (White Tara Sadhana RT Translation June21).
